The Vanishing of Ethan Carter burst onto the indie scene this fall with a unique and atmospheric game, expertly blending the genres of adventure, mystery and puzzle. If you’re a fan of the classic adventure puzzler Myst, you definitely want to check Ethan Carter out.
The game sets you off as a detective on the outskirts of a strange town. A letter in your possession, written to you by Ethan Carter shortly before his disappearance, begs you to investigate the odd things happening to his family. From here, it’s your job to piece together crimes on your own, using your supernatural sight of clues and their surroundings. Be warned, though, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter does not hold your hand; it’s very much a mystery puzzle game that treats you like an adult.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter has some of the most unique visuals I’ve ever seen, due to its use of a technique called photogammetry in the creation of its in game assets. This method allows assets to have a more “real world” feel to them, because they’re generated from dozens of photos of real world objects.
These breathtaking visuals coupled with the intriguing story and interesting gameplay put this game on my must-have list for 2014.
