Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons contains some of the most interesting gameplay I have ever experienced. Brothers is an adventure puzzle game that takes you on a journey as two brothers hoping to save their father. The gameplay premise is that you control the brothers separately using the left and right control sticks. They each have unique attributes that you must take advantage of throughout the game; the older brother is taller and stronger, allowing him to reach and pull levers, the younger is smaller and able to squeeze through tight spaces. This leads to some interesting puzzles and creative solutions.
The game’s visuals are great, the atmosphere is appropriately fantastical and foreboding, and the story is heart-wrenching (despite Brothers’ lack of spoken dialogue). At the climax of the story, I found myself invested in the characters and actually getting a bit emotional. That’s more than I can say for many blockbuster releases in recent memory.
At $2.99 (80% off) right now on Steam, this indie is an absolute steal. It will provide a mere handful of hours worth of play time, but those hours are well spent and well worth it.
